Too many mom's & dad's want to make their kids feel good aboout hammering a true novice wrestler. Every association has different rules--
The coach knows when a kid is a novice. It has little to do with time in the sport. It has everything to do with ability- regardless of age or years wrestling.

First of all lets really look at the word Novice(a person admitted to probationary membership ,beginner). The odds of a wrestler walking on mat for the first time and be a natural stud the likelyhood is slim to none. With this in mind PARENTS need to remember that they are beginners. i believe that a wrestler who wins 3 novice toury or places in 5 events should possibly be looked at no longer a novice and should be moved on to the open divisions. Its truely not fair for a beginner to be taken advantage of because a parent feels his kid wasnt working hard enough in practice or needs a moral boost by entering in a novice toury is not fair to the beginner who just took a beaten by them. Coaches and only coaches should have the final say not the parents.

Parents in general need to stay out of the picture. They need to support and comfort their kids.
Not coach and determine what meets they should attend- especially novie or open.
Let the coaches do their jobs. Support the coaches decision and encourage your kids. When the parents are in step with the coach, it is much easier to bring that particular wrestler along.
